Everything in front of your clients’ sites
A web application firewall, rate limiting, access control, TLS and DNS, with a control plane that versions and signs every change.
Web application firewall
Every request to a proxied hostname is inspected at the edge, and common attacks are stopped before they reach the origin.
- Rule levels
Off, low, medium or high: choose how strict the rules are for each site.
- Active, log-only or off
Active mode blocks. Log-only records what would have been blocked, so you can tune a site before enforcing. Off disables the WAF for that site.
- Per-site exceptions
Switch a rule off for a site or a path when it gets in the way of a legitimate plugin or form.
- Stack presets
Start from WordPress, Next.js, static or generic presets.
- Custom block page
Show a block page with your client’s branding instead of a generic error.
Access gate
Keep admin areas out of reach of bots and password guessing, without touching the application.
- Protect paths such as
/wp-adminRequests to a protected path are held at the edge until the visitor proves who they are.
- One-time e-mail codes
Authorised people receive a one-time code by e-mail, sent from
[email protected]. - A list of people per site
Decide who can reach each site’s admin area.
Rate limiting
Slow down brute force, scraping and abusive clients before they cost your origin anything.
- Per IP
Limit how many requests a single address can make.
- Per path and method
Set tighter limits for
POST /wp-login.php, an API endpoint or a search page. - At the edge
Excess requests are rejected by our nodes, so your server never sees them.
IP, country and threat-intelligence rules
Decide who reaches each site, by address, by network or by country.
- Allow and block lists
Single addresses or CIDR ranges, per site.
- Country rules
Allow or block traffic by country.
- Threat-intelligence feeds
Block addresses that appear in threat-intelligence IP feeds, which are updated automatically.
Automatic TLS
TLS is terminated at the edge, with certificates that look after themselves.
- Let’s Encrypt certificates
Issued automatically with DNS-01 or HTTP-01 validation.
- Renewed 30 days before expiry
Renewal starts 30 days before a certificate expires.
- Bring your own
Upload a certificate manually when a client needs a specific one.
- HSTS
Turn on HTTP Strict Transport Security per site.
Authoritative DNS
Once a domain is delegated to your pair, our nameservers answer for the whole zone.
- A fixed nameserver pair
Each account has its own pair under
ns.openwaf.dev, named after navigation: faros, polaris, meridian, azimut, sextant, compass, harbor, nautilus, portolan and beacon. - Hidden primary, public secondaries
The primary isn’t reachable from the Internet; public secondaries in Germany answer the queries.
- Proxied or DNS-only, per record
Choose which hostnames go through the WAF; everything else gets plain DNS answers.
- DNS editor Coming soon
Editing records from the web dashboard is on the way.
Site settings
Settings that usually end up scattered across server configs, kept in one place per site.
- Compression
gzip and Brotli compression at the edge.
- CORS allow-list
Control which origins may call the site’s APIs from a browser.
- Redirect allow-list
Limit where the site may redirect visitors, to stop open-redirect abuse.
- Request limits
Maximum request size and time-out towards the origin.
Versioned, signed configuration
Configuration is treated like code: recorded, explained and reversible.
- History and diff
Every change creates a new version you can compare with earlier ones.
- One-step rollback
Go back to a previous version of a site’s configuration in one step.
- Mandatory change reason
Every change records why it was made.
- Signed with Ed25519
Edge nodes only apply configuration documents with a valid signature.
- Last-known-good
If the control plane can’t be reached, nodes keep serving the last valid configuration.
- Under a minute
Changes reach all edge nodes in under a minute.
Audit log, security events and usage
Know what happened on each site, and show your clients.
- Audit log
Who changed what, on which site, when and why.
- Security events
Blocked and logged requests per site, with the rule that matched.
- Usage telemetry
Traffic figures per site.
API and command line
Everything is scriptable, so the same steps work for one domain or for many.
- API
Manage zones, DNS records, site settings and rules over the API, with tokens that expire and can be revoked.
- CLI
openwaf-cloud ctlfor scripted, repeatable operations.

Bring your agency’s sites into early access
OpenWAF is free with no limits while it is in early access. Tell us about your agency and the sites you manage, and we will set up your account and your nameserver pair.
